In the first day of HSUHK Sports Invitation Game 2019, HSUHK Women’s Basketball kicked off the event facing LU Women’s Basketball. LU took a little lead at the half, but it was the host, HSUHK who came from behind with a huge third quarter and finally won by 48:29. Afterwards, EdUHK Women’s Basketball against VTC Women’s Basketball. EdUHK obviously was the better team in the contest as they assured a commanding victory of 51:25. It was then followed by men’s basketball group matches, the first one to go was OUHK against EdUHK. Both teams played very physically and focused on their defence. It was a very close match until EdUHK closed the third quarter with a 8:2 run to establish a lead. Finally, they won by 46:35. After that, it was the host, HSUHK to play against CIHE. Despite only having six players on the field, CIHE showed their dedication by not letting HSUHK to get an easy one, but the physicality of CIHE was unsolved. HSUHK grabbed a significant victory of 73:57. Later, it was THEI facing SYU. It was an extremely close match as SYU headed to the locker room with a narrow 4-point lead at the half. In the third quarter, the SYU began to use the full court press defence and forced THEI to make multiple turnovers, which led to several fastbreak opportunities for SYU to enlarge the lead. At the end of the fourth quarter, THEI was on the edge of a successful comeback as they once cut the lead to just 3 points. However, they could not grasp the chance to tie the game and they finally lost by 4. The final match of first day was VTC against CHC. CHC has four active Hong Kong Divisional One players and because of that they are well regarded as the favourite to win the tournament. But CHC’s opening quarter did not seem to be commanding at all, VTC came into the game like they were the better team as they quickly built a double-digit lead in the opening quarter. CHC was getting into their rhythm as they erased the deficit and regained an 8-point lead at the half. In third quarter, VTC had totally no answer for CHC as No.3 of CHC hit 4 straight 3s to extend the lead to 20 or more. VTC had tried to close the gap but they just could not break CHC’s defence. CHC defeat VTC by 69:56.
The second day of the HSUHK Invitation Games 2019 also staged men’s basketball and women’s basketball group competitions. The first match of the day was LU Women’s Basketball vs OU Women’s Basketball. LU had only 6 players available for the contest and they finally lost by 27:34. Later, the host of the HSUHK Invitation Games 2019, HSUHK Women’s Basketball faced the Women’s Basketball of EdUHK. EdUHK was obviously unmatched as they cruised HSUHK and took a commanding lead after first half, they finally won by 67:22. After a couple of women’s basketball matches, it was followed by more excited and physical men’s basketball. Firstly it was OUHK facing THEi, the physical defence of OU made it difficult for THEi to matchup against OU, while OU had established a comfortable double-digit lead and finally won by 50:20. Afterwards, it was CIHE playing against VTC, VTC remained control of the whole game and won by 77:60. Followed by another Group A match, EdUHK facing SYU. Although the overall shooting percentage of EdUHK was not as good as expected, their team defence was extraordinary as they held their opponent to only 39 points. They finally won by 9. The last men’s game of the day was the host, HSUHK challenging CHC. CHC had been struggling at the field in first half as they missed most of the 3-point attempts. Meanwhile, HSUHK had been shooting extremely well as they took a lead of 7 to end the first half. In third quarter, CHC began to rally as they put more efforts on the defensive end which allowed them to shift the momentum towards themselves, HSUHK just had no answer to CHC’s star players, at the end CHC prevailed to win by 62:55. The final match of the day was HSUHK Women’s Basketball against VTC Women’s Basketball. HSUHK had already played a match in the morning and they had to play back to back games with only couple of hours to rest. HSUHK had a huge 15:4 lead at the half since VTC had been struggling to find the rim. However, in 2nd half, HSUHK’s physical issues began to emerge. VTC was gifted a couple of fastbreak opportunities based on HSUHK’s turnovers. At the end of the fourth quarter, the lead of HSUHK was cut to just three points, but VTC failed to score in the final possession. As a result, HSUHK grabbed a narrow victory of 24:21 and officially ended the second day of the event.
