“I am quite an competitive person.” —- Keen on new challenges, Sam (Epee) started to play sports when he was a secondary school student.

The first types of sports I played did not include fencing, but swimming and fitness. As I knew that the university provided fencing classes, I tried them out of curiosity. And I have fallen in love with this special and challenging sport ever since. In my opinion, fencing looks classic and elegant, but it is also slightly different from the majority of other sports in nature. Take swimming as a typical example. Swimmers need to compete against time and often aim to break their personal records. On the contrary, fencing is a more interactive sport. Not only do we have to pay extra attention to the game every minute and second, but we also have physical opponents. If you want to defeat your opponent, you need to use different tactics and techniques, and therefore the sense of success brought about by winning a fencing competition is greater.

I still remember that when I first entered university, I had difficulty adapting to the environment and learning atmosphere here. I had no close friend and all relationship and connection seemingly had to be re-established. I am very grateful that I could have the opportunity to join the HSUHK fencing team. The HSUHK fencing team is as harmonious as a big family. Senior teammates are very patient about guiding me and teaching me different fencing skills, which helps me gradually get more familiar with this sport.

I remembered that our coach once said: Learning to control your own mind on the court is the way to win —– “If you cannot take good control of yourself, it is impossible for you to control your opponents or even the competition.”

Through different actual experiences, I gradually understand that if I want to win a fencing competition, I should not only train my technical skills continuously, but also learn how to adjust my mind. If my mind is not firm enough: “It’s not that the opponent beats you, but you beat yourself.”

After every training, no matter how my performance goes, I review myself to see how I should make improvement or what I should do to make further progress. For example, I am always poor at doing muscular endurance and cardiorespiratory sports. I am easily exhausted when I play in a game for a long time. Therefore, I will focus on training and overcome my weaknesses. I wish that my hard work would help me to become ready for a long-term battle and improve my performance in my next fencing game.
