Students Sharing 2017 Summer Abroad Programme

What Participants Say…

University of British Columbia Vancouver Summer Program, Canada

IP So Hang (BBA, Year 3)

I am glad to have had so much fun and memorable moments in Vancouver. This programme offered us lessons of political science and international finance. In UBC, the teaching method is far more interactive, enabling students to express their thoughts. Teachers also encouraged us to discuss and think critically. The programme also offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, such as hiking, blueberry picking, kayaking etc. I could be able to engage in the different cultures and lifestyle of Canada and learn more about the country. I am also able to meet friends from different countries, such as Mainland China, Mexico, the UK, Dubai, India and the Netherlands. By exchanging our cultural ideas, that helps to broaden my horizons.

Mainland China

CHAU Ka Lok (Third from the right, the front row)

CHAU Ka Lok (BJC, Year 2)

CHUNG Sin YU (BBA-SCM, Year 2)

CHAN Kin Fung (Middle, second row)

CHAN Kin Fung (BBA-FA, Year 3)

I enjoyed the Summer School very much and I have participated in many interesting activities with other students from all over the world. Besides offering Korean lessons, the programme also included different activities for us to learn various aspects of Korean culture. We have learnt Taekwondo, traditional music instruments, Korean dance etc. We also took some field trips, including visiting a national park and the United Nations Memorial Cemetery. This fruitful trip gives rise to many happy memories for me as I have built a close relationship with each of the participants during the programme.

Hertford College, Oxford Advanced English Language and British Culture Three Week Programme, UK

YIM Yu Sum (BA-ENG, Year 3)

I totally enjoyed the time spent in Oxford. I could hardly enjoy these activities in Hong Kong, such as playing Frisbee on a large piece of green grass together with new friends and punting in the river under a beautiful sunset. I had the opportunity to meet new friends, try new things and experience life in Oxford. Staying in Oxford helps me to get connected with the daily life of the UK. The atmosphere in the UK is awesome. The most important thing is that I could gain a perception of the British culture and improve my English. What a wonderful trip it is!

The First 100 Days of Trump Presidency, Study Tour in Washington D.C., US

YE Yingchong (Third from the right, front row)

YE Yingchong (BBA, Year 3)

During the tour to Washington, Aggie, the coordinator of the programme, introduced the main landmarks to us. She led us to the Newseum, where the most impressive historical events we found were wreckages of 911 Terrorist Incident and the Berlin Wall. Afterwards, we visited the National Air and Space Museum to know more about the history of flight and the lives of astronauts on the moon. We also spent time at the East-West Center, the Heritage Foundation and the US-China Business Council. People there were very friendly and willing to share with us. We had some in-depth discussions, which inspired me to think further on global issues Upon the visit, I had more insights on the situation of human rights and trading between the US and China.

What Participants Say…

University of British Columbia Vancouver Summer Program, Canada

TSE Long Yuet (right)

TSE Long Yuet (BBA-MGT, Year 2)

I have joined the UBC summer exchange programme (June). I enjoyed the learning atmosphere at UBC; it is very different from my studying in Hong Kong. First, the students actively participated in class, we were allowed and encouraged to speak up even though  our opinions might be different or against the professors. Between the professors and us, we were more like friends than students and teachers, we would hang out after classes and talk about our lives beyond  the campus grounds.

Although all of the students were from different countries and colleges, we still worked as a team, create a long-lasting friendship and built  a strong bonding among us.

Aichi Shukutoku University 4-week Summer Japanese Programme, Japan

YIP Hoi Ching (BTB, Year 4)

It was really happy to study at Aichi Shukutoku University. Apart from Japanese language classes, we experienced Japanese culture through the traditional tea ceremony, ikebana, and shodo. I have met lots of overseas and local students there. My Japanese buddy took me to the Nagoya Port Aquarium and the fireworks festival. It was my first time wearing a yukata to participate in such a huge event in Japan, and I felt very excited. In total there were two classes with four students each. We were all exchange students and were taught by native Japanese teachers. Studying at ASU was really interesting  as we needed to create conversations from the pictures in Japanese almost every lesson.

LAM Tsz Wing (Second from the right)

LAM Tsz Wing (BSS-AS, Year 2)

During the week at Niigata, I had a deeper understanding of Niigata City. I have  learnt more about what is special in Niigata after tours to numerous places such as metal and knife production house. Our task was to conduct a 10-minute presentation on the final day to share how to promote the food culture and high-quality products of Japan to the world. There were two Japanese students in my group, and they helped a lot to acquire knowledge in different areas such as the language, Japanese geography, etc. It enabled me to do the presentation more effectively and efficiently as we exchanged ideas from  different kinds of perspectives.

Mainland China

LAW Kai Chun (BBA, Year 2)

Chung-Ang University International Summer Program, South Korea

FONG Yuen Ting (First from right, second row)

FONG Yuen Ting (BBA, Year 2)

Joining the Chung-Ang University International Summer Programme is a really good and unforgettable experience. From this programme, I have not only learnt some basic Korean, but also gained a greater understanding of the Korean culture, society and also met lots of new friends. Among all the cultural events, the DMZ tour was my favourite. It provided us with a chance to get into the Korean Demilitarized Zone and the Joint Security Area. We have gained a deeper understanding of the Korea history, especially the Korea Civil War, and learnt more about the relationship between North and South Korea. It was a precious experience, and I enjoyed it.

2018 Hanyang ERICA Summer School, South Korea

FONG Lok Tim (BSS-AS, Year 2)

This summer abroad programme provided me with an opportunity to experience the local Korean culture and communicated with Koreans. In the classes, most of my classmates spoke Putonghua beside my friend and I. It was a great chance to learn Putonghua and Korean at the same time. My Korean teacher tried to build up a relaxed atmosphere in the learning process. She played K-pop songs during the break time and gave us Korean snacks in the class. Besides, we went to the Korea Traditional Culture Centre and I wore hanbok for the first time.  Moreover, we also learnt what people do on Korea Day.

2018 Hanyang International Summer School, South Korea

He Suyung (BSS-AS, Year 1)

This study tour has brought me lots of exposure and life experience. Hanyang offered a wide range of courses and activities for us to fully immerse in the Korean culture. Most importantly, I made countless unforgettable memories with my new friends from Russia, Malaysia and Taiwan and built a deep relationship with them. I was grateful for joining this summer school because it gave me a chance to understand different cultures, not just for Korea, but also other parts of the world. I truly believe the things I learnt and experienced during this study tour will be very useful for my study in the future.

Pukyong National University 2018 International Summer School, South Korea

LAM Yau Hei (BBA, Year 4)

I had an unforgettable memory in Busan summer exchange programme. I studied Introduction to Sailing Yacht in the morning. The course included theories and practical classes. I learnt to stand up paddle boarding during the course, and it was very interesting. We also joined some cultural activities in the afternoon. We learnt Taekwondo, Korean calligraphy, K-pop Dance, Korean food cooking and so on. We also went to some field trips including visiting the Aquarium, Gyeongju and Haeundae Beach. The programme allowed me to go deeply into Korean campus life and know more about Korea. It also created some wonderful memories for us. I also met some friends around the world such as Indonesia, Taiwan and Mainland China. What a wonderful summer programme in Busan.

LO Kar Li (BSS-AS, Year 1)

This was one of the best summers I had so far. Being in the small city of Oxford, I was like living in a dream everyday. Walking like locals, seeing these old and prestigious colleges of Oxford University everyday, even going to class on one was just overwhelming that even I see the same view everyday, I could not help but take pictures over and over again. I can talk about this experience for days. My professors who have been nothing but inspiring and helpful, new found friends with whom I shared my England adventures with and all the tiny bits of this programme is all worth sharing.

UCLA Summer Sessions, US

AU YEUNG Pui Ki (BBA, Year 3)

I took Environmental Economy and Astronomy in UCLA. The study atmosphere in UCLA was quite different from HSMC’s. Students participated actively in classes. They raised questions and discussed in class. Also, private study rooms were fully booked since week one, what an impressive learning attitude!  What’s more, the school campus was huge, providing many facilities and valuable resources to students. Sunset Canyon Recreation Center was where students could swim, play volleyball and barbecue; John Wooden Center was where students could do indoor rock climbing, weight training and saunas as well.

Students Sharing 2019 Summer Abroad Programme

What Participants Say…

Australian Catholic University (ACU) July School, Australia

WONG Cheuk Lam (BJC, Year 2)

My journey to ACU was wonderful and unforgettable. The staff members and teachers were friendly and always willing to help me and the other international students. They would like to share where the destinations we should visit apart from teaching.

There was a great difference of study atmosphere between Hong Kong and Sydney that the teachers in ACU were always inviting students to share their experiences or personal ideas. I was more engaged in the lessons there.

Linnaeus University Summer Academy, Sweden

WANG Jingshu (BJC, Year 1)

I had a wonderful time at Linnaeus University in Sweden this summer. In class, the teachers always interacted with our classmates, instead of giving lectures all the time while the students keep taking notes. At the same time, I also learned how to cooperate with people from different countries. Most importantly, I began to have a more diverse and critical view of things.

During my spare time, I participated in three trips organized by the Summer Academy. We went to the island to enjoy the natural scenery, went to moose park to get closer contact with animals, and went to Stockholm to experience more Swedish culture. Of course, I also met a lot of friends from other places, we explored nice food and visited local attractions!

That was literally a sweet memory and I will never forget it. Also, I am grateful to HSUHK for providing such an opportunity for me.

Hertford College, Oxford Advanced English Language and British Culture Three Week Programme, UK

YIP Ka Yi (BBA, Year 3)

In Oxford, the study atmosphere is quite different from Hong Kong. I was able to learn various topics like British fashion, music, movies, and even Shakespeare. They really encouraged us to discuss in class and talk more with the teachers and classmates. In this summer, I learnt not only the knowledge about Britain but also communication skills. I talked with teachers, Residential Advisors (RAs) and local people in English all the time to improve my language skills. Besides studying, we got a lot of free time as well. RAs prepared some tours for us on every Friday. We went to London together and to Stratford-upon-Avon the place where Shakespeare was born. The whole summer was fantastic, and it will be one of the memorable memories in my entire life. I wish I can have a chance to join this kind of summer courses or study in Oxford in the future.

University of British Columbia Vancouver Summer Program, Canada

POON Hiu Yan (BBA, Year 3)

From 8 June 2018 to 8 July 2018, I joined an activity called UBC Vancouver Summer Program 2019 which was organized by The University of British Columbia (UBC). It has been a very rewarding and pleasant experience to me, and I have enjoyed my stay in Canada a lot.

The course that I find most impressive was International Business Management. It was because the professor gave us a lot of time to have discussions on the topics and current events happened all around the world. As there were international students from Mexico, India, Singapore and Mainland China, there were diverse mindsets in the class. The course was helping me to enhance my mindset, start to care about the news in worldwide and make real-world business decisions by concerning many international issues.

University of Niigata Prefecture - International Joint Summer Seminar, Japan

KWONG Kam Shan (BBA-MGT, Year 3)

This was the first time I travelled my own. We visited different factories, e.g. Miso factory, Sake factory, to learn the making process of food. Besides, we also participated in an experience of making fire by using Chinese traditional method and making Soba. We had a presentation in the last day of seminar which is a good chance for us to express our feeling and learning. Moreover, I needed to use three languages to communicate with my group mates, but it did not affect our friendship, it only took more time. During spare time, I hung out with Japanese girls form Yokohama and tried different kinds of food. I am glad to join this seminar.

Mainland China

LIN Zhicheng (BBA, Year 4)

Pukyong National University 2019 International Summer School, South Korea

ASLAM Hamza Saghir (DSBI, Year 4)

The Summer Abroad Programme at the PKNU ISS was one of the most remarkable experiences I have ever had.

I have taken the Korean Language course and I believe it turned out to be a successful one since I can now get to read Korean. Also, the students were very hardworking and were willing to always share their experiences of their current lifestyle with the professor.

During my spare time, I would usually go outside the campus to new places with different groups and discover the real beauty of Busan. I could finally get to observe the city’s lifestyle and the etiquette of the people.

I would highly recommend our HSUHK students to join this summer program in the coming year and I’m sure it will be a memorable experience!

Feng Chia University 2019 FCU International Summer School, Taiwan

CHENG Tsz Ying (BBA-FA, Year 2)

Being a student in my sophomore year, I chose to spend my summer vacation in participating in the Feng Chia University International Summer School Program. Feng Chia University has a beautiful campus, thus a lot of passionate and professional teachers. The first class we had was about Taiwan drama and throughout the whole program, we went to a total of two field trips to Lukang and YunLin and one bus tour on the three Fridays. We had regular classes every Tuesdays to Thursdays and DIY courses every Mondays. In the DIY courses, we learnt about how to make traditional rice dough figures, do Taiji and Qigong, calligraphy and traditional Chinese knotting.

Throughout this program, not only have I learnt a lot about Taiwanese and Chinese culture , but also different countries’ cultures from friends who come from all over the world, like Indonesia, Mongolia, Australia, Korea etc. Summer holiday well spent!
