Community Engagement – Past Event Showcase

Community Engagement
Past Event Showcase

Community engagement has always been a key pillar of student development at HSUHK. Over the years, the Student Affairs Office (SAO) has organized and supported numerous impactful initiatives, empowering students to address societal needs while honing essential soft skills such as empathy, teamwork, and leadership.

This Past Event Showcase highlights our journey and celebrates the diverse projects led by our students, reflecting their dedication to creating meaningful change in the community.

VolTrekkers Service-learning Scheme (2016-2025)
HSUHK Volunteer Team (2013-2024)

VolTrekkers Service-learning Scheme (2016-2025)

VolTrekkers Service-learning Training Scheme started from 2016/2017 and ended in 2024/2025. The scheme was organized by Student Affairs Office (SAO) and supported by Hong Kong Shun Lung Yan Chak Foundation Limited (香港順龍仁澤基金會), aimed to provide a solid service-learning experience to HSUHK students and foster their development as global citizens. Through the Scheme, students had the opportunity to plan and implement their own service projects under the support and guidance of SAO.

The Scheme allowed students to come into close contact with service targets, providing them with a deeper understanding and reflection on specific social issues. By engaging in the programme, participants were able to learn, grow, and enrich their life experiences through planning, implementation, reflection, and evaluation of their service efforts. Upon completing the program, students gained valuable skills such as research, interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and programme design.

The Scheme was divided into THREE stages:

Stage 1 – Participating in various trainings on specific social issues
Stage 2 – Forming team to initiate your own Community Care Project!
Stage 3 – Engaging in a fully/partially FUNDED Overseas service-learning trip

Participants will be involved in assessing needs of service targets, conceiving feasible and sustainable service projects, having post-service evaluation and reflection after returning back to HK.

HSUHK Volunteer Team (2013-2024)

Established in 2013, HSUHK Volunteer Team (香港恒生大學義工隊 – 「恒義」) offers students opportunities for community engagement. Beyond participation in community services, comprehensive trainings on service skills and sharing by various NGO co-workers are offered to students, enhancing students’ social awareness and responsibilities and equipping students with skills for serving the others. The Volunteer Team had engaged in various types of community services including organizing food waste-reduction campaign, visiting homeless dogs, promoting organ donation, offering online tutorial for primary students, sending self-designed greeting cards to the disabilities, etc.

To encourage more student-led service projects in the University, HSUHK Volunteer Team was restructured into a Student Organising Committee in 2016/17.

With the aim to encourage active participation of HSUHK students in volunteer services, the Organising Committee (OC) works to initiate plans and coordinate service projects for the HSUHK community. Students build a strong partnership with NGOs to organise volunteer services and actively engage themselves in service planning and volunteer management.

Peer Mentor Scheme

Peer Mentor Scheme

“Peer Mentor Scheme” – spreading love in the campus

The Student Affairs Office, Peer Mentor Scheme launched in the academic year of 2015-16 academic year to promote caring atmosphere in the campus.

The theme “ABYS (Always By Your Side)” is designed for 2017-18 academic year to foster a positive and caring atmosphere on the HSUHK campus, promote help-seeking behavior when having emotional distress or feeling suicidal, and lower the stigma associated with mental health difficulties by receiving available social and professional support. The project also aims to train a group of Peer Mentors who are able to identify and assist students with social adjustment and psychological needs, and make referral to professional when necessary.

Senior Peer Mentors who served as Peer Mentors last year will act as the key organizers in this project under the professional advice by counselors and staff from Student Affairs Office. Senior Peer Mentors will also support the training of Peer Mentors and initiate caring activities in campus to achieve the project objectives.

Coached by Counsellors of Personal Growth & Counseling, Peer Mentors will attend a series of systematic training to facilitate participant’s peer helping skills, and will organize Student Initiated Programs to help students better understand themselves and facilitate the process of Peer Mentors to identify the students with emotional or mental needs for referral to professionals. Peer Mentors will also be awarded with a certificate of participation for contributing and taking part in the trainings and events held by the program through Peer Mentors Recognition Ceremony in the end of the project.
