Application Forms for SEN Support

For Students

Students who wish to receive support are invited to register with us through Registration Form.

Students are welcome to fill in the online registration form with both English and Chinese. 

Our SAO Officers will contact the registered students shortly for further discussion on the tailor-made support services.

Confidentiality is guaranteed within ethical and legal guidelines.

For Staff

Staff can refer cases by submitting the online referral form (staff log-in is required) or by email to sen@hsu.edu.hk with the student’s consent.

Assistive Devices and Technologies

Assistive devices and technologies are designed to enable people with special educational needs to live healthily, productively and independently, and to learn effectively. The assistive devices listed below are available for loan at the Student Affairs Office. Students who meet the eligibility requirement can borrow assistive devices by completing the borrowing form. Students will receive a confirmation email within five working days upon submission of the borrowing form. Students are encouraged to contact your designated SEN Case Officer if there is any item that you find helpful but is not on the list.

Eligibility

Current students who have registered for the SEN Support Service. 

If you have not yet registered for the service, please complete the registration form before using the assistive devices borrowing service. 

Item Collection Period

Borrowers should collect the reserved items within 5 working days of receiving the confirmation email issued by the Student Affairs Office. Any uncollected items will be released to all eligible students to borrow after the collection period.

Loan Period

The loan period for each item is up to one academic year. All loan items must be returned to the Student Affairs Office by the due date.

Extension of Loan Period

Borrowers can apply for an extension of the loan period. Please complete the borrowing form 5 working days prior to the due date for renewal. 

 Overdue Punishment

An overdue punishment will be imposed on each loan item if returned late. Any item(s) that are not returned within the loan period will be deemed as lost. Borrowers will be liable to pay an indemnity for the loan item(s) (the original cost of every piece of equipment and accessory). 

 Replacement Cost for Lost or Damaged Item

Borrowers will be liable to pay an indemnity for any damage or loss to each loan item (the original cost of every piece of equipment and accessory). 

The Student Affairs Office reserves the right to amend the terms and conditions of assistive devices borrowing service. Should there be disputes, the Student Affairs Office reserves the right to the final decision.

Barrier-free Self Study Room in the Library

The Student Affairs Office collaborates with the Library to provide academic support facilities and services to students with special educational needs. A barrier-free self-study room (A108) is located on the 1/F of the Library which is accessible during library opening hours. For reservations, please visit the Library website.

OrCam Read: OrCam Read is a portable gadget that captures text, converts it into audible speech, and begins reading it aloud to the user. It is suitable for individuals with mild visual impairment or reading difficulties like dyslexia. For details, please approach the library staff at the Service Counter on 1/F.

Students can communicate their specific needs and access accommodations such as assistive devices and technologies that facilitate their effective use of Generative AI tools.

Indoor and Outdoor Navigation Service

CityGeni is an innovative mobile application that revolutionises how people navigate indoor and outdoor spaces in the city. Designed with inclusivity in mind, CityGeni offers two distinct modes to cater to diverse user needs:

1) Map Mode: This intuitive mode visually represents the surroundings, allowing users to plan their routes and track their progress effortlessly. The map can be customised to individual preferences, ensuring a seamless experience for non-disabled individuals and wheelchair users alike.

2) Text & Audio Mode: Tailored for users with visual impairments, this mode offers auditory guidance and textual descriptions, enabling them to navigate confidently. The app’s advanced features, such as real-time positioning and turn-by-turn navigation, enhance travel accessibility and reduce the risk of getting lost.

One of CityGeni’s standout capabilities is its ability to provide unobstructed pathways for all users, including those utilising wheelchairs and strollers. Speech-to-text technology

The speech-to-text technology enables users to accurately convert speech into text without having to type. The software and devices below include speech-to-text functionality.

Reading and Writing Tools

Reading and writing tools allow users, particularly those with visual impairment or specific learning disabilities, to write more effectively as well as to read and comprehend content.

Math Assistant

Math Assistant assists users in learning mathematics by presenting step-by-step instructions.

In addition to the Transcript of Studies, the University developed Awards and Co-curricular Achievements Transcript (ACT) to encourage students’ all-round development and recognize their achievements. The design of ACT will further support students to create a full record of their participation and achievement in co-curricular learning activities throughout their period of study, reflecting their breadth of knowledge, all-roundedness, personal effectiveness and social engagement. Achievements and activities to be recorded in the ACT will be categorized into three areas, namely

(1) Awards and Scholarships;

(2) Leadership and Service Positions; and

(3) Co-curricular Engagement

Awards and Scholarships

To showcase students’ remarkable academic and non-academic achievements during their study at the University, scholarships and/or awards administered by the University received by students would be recorded in this section. Record of scholarship / award issued by external organizations is subject to provision of scholarship / award certificate and assessment by the Student Affairs Office (SAO) and/or relevant departments / programme offices of the University.

Leadership and Service Positions

To advocate the importance of nurturing of student leaders, and to recognize students’ commitment and contribution to the community and the society, leadership and/or service positions taken up by students, both on and off-campus with responsibility last for duration of not less than one year, would be recorded in this category; one-off leadership and/or service responsibility would not be counted. Record of off-campus leadership and/or service position is subject to the provision of proof and assessment by the SAO and/or relevant departments/ programme offices of the University.

Co-curricular Engagement

To reflect students’ learning outcomes through participation in various co-curricular activities and major events, to reflect students’ development under the University’s iGPS “Desired Graduate Attributes” model.

(i) – Intellectual
Competence

Participation in activities which would induce academic interest and furnish academic knowledge of students, enhance students’ critical thinking, and strengthen problem-solving techniques could be categorized under (i) – Intellectual Competence.

(G) – Generic
Skills

Students’ generic skills would be strengthened and consolidated through participation in co-curricular activities; while sense of global citizenship and preparation for globalization and internationalization could be developed in inter-cultural learning activities.

(P) – Personal
Development

Through proactive participation and engagement in integrated student development programmes, students’ positive attitudes and characters could be developed and polished.

(S) – Social
Engagement

Participation in activities which would induce academic interest and furnish academic knowledge of students, enhance students’ critical thinking, and strengthen problem-solving techniques could be categorized under (i) – Intellectual Competence.

Students can submit the external record(s) <here> which fulfill the 3 categories to the SAO for the University approval. Approved record(s) will automatically be reflected on the ACT

Students are required to accomplish the requirements of iGPS Unit/ CS-ECA-PA Hours requirement and attend College Assembly – HSUHK Liberal Agora according to the entry year and the year of intake.

Preventing Sexual Harassment

Introduction

The University is committed to provide a learning and work environment that is free of sexual harassment for all staff members, students, and other persons who have dealings with the University. All staff members/students should be aware of this and are encouraged to seek advice from Human Resources Office (for staff) or Student Affairs Office (for students) on issues concerning sexual harassment. 

Legal Definition

According to Sex Discrimination Ordinance (SDO), the legal definition of “sexual harassment” includes the following situations: 

(a)  The person 

(i) makes unwelcome sexual advances, or unwelcome request for sexual favours, to that person; or

(ii) engages in other unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature in relation to that person; in circumstances in which a reasonable person, having regard to all the circumstances, would have anticipated that that person would be offended, humiliated or intimidated; or


(b) The person, alone or together with other persons, engages in conduct of a  sexual nature which creates a hostile or intimidating environment for that person.

(c) The person who knowingly aids another person to do an act of sexual harassment shall be treated as he/she is doing an act of the like description.

Examples of Sexual Harassment

With reference to the Equal Opportunities Commission, the following are some examples of sexual harassment acts: 

 

  • Uninvited physical contact or gestures 
  • Unwelcome requests for sex 
  • Sexual comments or jokes 
  • Intrusive questions or insinuations of a sexual nature about a person’s private life 
  • Displays of offensive or pornographic material such as posters, pinups, cartoons, graffiti or calendars around the workplace/classrooms/Residential Colleges 
  • Unwanted invitations 
  • Offensive communications of a sexual nature (letters, phone calls, faxes, e-mail messages, etc.) 
  • Staring or leering at a person or at parts of his/her body 
  • Unwelcome physical contact such as massaging a person without invitation or deliberately brushing up against him/her 
  • Touching or fiddling with a person’s clothing e.g. lifting up skirts or shirts, or putting hands in a person’s pocket

Staff Counselling Services can provide professional counselling/consultation services to full-time staff members to assist them to resolve problems/difficulties or challenges arising from personal, family or work areas. The services mainly include:

  1. To design and oversee the implementation of policies, guidelines, and practices relating to sexual harassment;

  3. To enhance the education on promoting the awareness of Sexual Harassment Policy and Procedures in the University;
  4. To serve in the investigation panels as the convenor or a member if necessary.
