HSUHK Inclusion Festival 2025

The Inclusion Festival was held on 27 and 28 February to promote multicultural inclusion and foster understanding and acceptance for individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and as well as individuals with special learning needs.

The festival featured captivating performances from dance groups from BEYOND Bollywood that highlighted diverse cultural arts including an Indian classical dance and belly dancing. Ethnic minorities representatives from the dance groups also shared their cultural backgrounds and personal experiences of moving to Hong Kong.

The Inclusion Festival brought over ten social enterprises and charitable organizations to campus this year. Through a series of interactive games booths, cultural food stalls , students were able to learn more about multiculturalism, as well as gain a better understanding of what individuals with special educational needs experience. At HSUHK, we strive to build a harmonious, equal, respectful, and inclusive campus.

January 2025

Cultural Sensitivity Training

On January 8, 2025, the Student Affairs Office (SAO), in collaboration with the Teaching and Learning Enhancement (TLE) Section of the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), organized a cultural sensitivity training session led by WEDO Global. This interactive training aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of the challenges faced by ethnic minority (EM) students.

Through collaborative activities and real-life case sharing, attendees gained insights into fostering a more inclusive and respectful environment. They learned key strategies for effective cross-cultural communication and practical dos and don’ts for creating inclusive workplaces and learning spaces.

This training marked a significant step towards building a university culture that values diversity and inclusion. By equipping participants with the tools to engage across differences, the session laid the groundwork for a supportive and harmonious campus community, striving to celebrate diversity and promote a true sense of belonging for all.

EM-Power: Islamic Talk - Rights in Islam & Importance of Living Halal

The talk was led by Imam of Kowloon Masjid, Nahvi Muhyideen, to deepen students’ understanding of Islamic principles and daily live practices. The session began with an introduction to the fundamental rights of Islam, emphasizing the significance of understanding these rights in the context of contemporary society. The speaker outlined key rights granted to individuals, including the right to life, dignity, and freedom of belief. He clarified that it is not merely a set of restrictions but a holistic approach to life that fosters spiritual growth, community well-being, and personal integrity.

Enhance Mental Wellness in an Inclusive Campus

The “Enhance Mental Wellness in an Inclusive Campus” event successfully brought together a diverse group of participants to address the mental health needs of our newly admitted students. The Student Affairs Office (SAO) shared valuable survey findings and SEN student profiles, highlighting the unique challenges faced by these individuals. Representatives from various departments and supporting staff engaged in meaningful discussions, emphasizing their roles in fostering a supportive campus culture.

EM-Power: Halloween Orientation Day

A student led group – EMPower transformed the campus into a spooktacular hub of creativity and community spirit at Halloween Orientation Day. This festive event welcomed new and returning members alike, providing an opportunity to connect, learn, and celebrate the Halloween season in a fun and engaging way. It starts with interactive icebreaking games and following with treasure hunt where students have to find all hidden hints on campus to win the prize. The best costumes student was also granted a prize. The event concluded in group photos and Halal Food as refreshment.

EM-Power: DIY Mosaic Lamp Workshop

A student led group – EMPower hosted a vibrant and creative DIY Turkish Mosaic Lamp Workshop that brought together art enthusiasts and community members for an afternoon of crafting and connection. The workshop kicked off with a brief introduction from the EMPower committee team, who shared the mission of the organization and the importance of fostering cultural diversity and community engagement. Participants were then guided by skilled instructors through the process of creating their very own Turkish mosaic lamps. Throughout the session, participants learned about the history of mosaic art and its cultural significance, enriching their understanding of this beautiful craft. The studio provided turkish tea and refreshments, allowing students to mingle and discuss their creations while enjoying light snacks.

Walking in their Shoes: A Theatrical Exploration of SEN Student Experiences 

On 28 August 2024, in collaboration with the Student Affairs Office (SAO), the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Section (TLE) of the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), played host to the captivating drama workshop ” Walking in Their Shoes: A Theatrical Exploration of SEN Student Experiences ” as part of CTL’s “Teaching Excellence in the New Semester: Refresh, Recharge, and Renew” series. Presented by the AddOil Workshop, this immersive experience blurred the lines between reality and performance, offering academic and administrative colleagues a unique insight into the world of students with Special Educational Needs (SEN).  

Around 40 colleagues gathered to enjoy and engage in a 90-minute theatrical exploration of empathy and professional growth, stepping into the challenges and triumphs of SEN students through discussions and interactive role-playing. Selective participants actively shaped the workshop’s narrative, gaining firsthand understanding of the daily hurdles faced by SEN students. 

Empowered with practical strategies to support diverse learning needs, attendees left with a renewed commitment to fostering inclusive educational environments. As the curtains drew to a close, its impact lingered in the hearts and minds of all who participated. The drama performance served as a reminder of the power of empathy, understanding, and collaborative efforts in creating a more inclusive and supportive educational community at HSUHK.
