Many people think that athletes are born to be successful and have great achievements, but sometimes we may ignore their efforts made during their practices or competitions. Although most talented athletes became champions many times, there is another type of athletes, including Marco Siu Chung Hong, who made lots of effort in his training.

When Marco was small, he got asthma. His parents wanted him to improve his health, so he started playing badminton and Taekwondo when he was six years old. However, he did not have much talent, and he just joined the extracurricular activity class for relaxation. As Marco had not set any target for playing badminton, he did not have a great improvement for a number of years. In contrast, he kept upgrading himself to obtain the black belt in Taekwondo.

After getting into secondary school, Marco joined the badminton team at school, practicing with other students with more advanced skills and took part in the Inter-school competition. Once he lost in a game getting 0 point, while his opponent scored 21 points. At that time, he realised that he had to play harder and strive to win. He could not treat it as an interest class anymore. Due to his health problem, Marco put more effort into boosting his stamina. He was hardworking during school team practices and wished to achieve an enormous improvement.

When Marco became a senior form student, he had to focus on studying for the DSE. Therefore, he could only choose either badminton or Taekwondo. As Marco enjoys team activities, badminton was relatively common and it might help him in the future, he decided to give up playing Taekwondo in which he excelled. During school team training, he found joy in badminton and he liked this sports activity more and more. Finally, Marco could become the champion in the Inter-school badminton competition for his school when he was Form 5.

In his four-year university life, Marco was one of HSUHK’s team members, and had been the school team captain for three years. In this period, he proactively trained, participated in different competitions with his teammates, and usually won in internal games because of his improved skills. Moreover, he represented his club to become the 2nd runner-up and achieved championship in mixed double games. Although he met players with mature skills and attitudes, he tried his best to fight against them and won finally. His persevering attitude was also admired by his team members.

Marco is a good example illustrating that a successful athlete needs to be patient, hardworking and positive when facing failure, and it does not necessarily depend on his/ her muscle power or talent.
